This year’s festival features six outstanding one-act plays, with three
productions presented each evening. Audiences can enjoy an eclectic mix of
comedy, mystery, drama, and contemporary storytelling, all performed by local
artists in an intimate theatre setting.
Performances begin at 7:30pm on both evenings.
Friday, July 3
- Rulers by Gord Love, music by Michael Capon. A poignant and witty musical
play that deconstructs the high-stakes emotional landscape of a teacher’s
first day of school, as she transitions from idealistic dreams of guiding young
minds to the brink of a psychological breakdown caused by the diverse,
often overwhelming needs of her students.
- Ethically Sourced Chocolate in the Post-Extinction Era by B.C. Gorrie, N.
Neokleous, and M. Thaker. Directed by B.C. Gorrie. A one-act sci-fi comedy
set in the year 2187, when a routine archaeological recovery in what was
formerly known as Belgium unearths the impossible: the last chocolate bars
in existence.
- A Quarter Hour With Arsène Lupin by Maurice Leblanc, translated and
adapted by Matt Kane. Directed by Lloyd Balme. While in Étretat for a few
days’ holiday, Arsène Lupin investigates the theft of ten thousand francs
from an American tourist at the Hôtel des Roches Grises. The gentleman
thief takes advantage of his investigation to steal all the jewelry found in the
hotel rooms he visits, while also romancing a bathing beauty.
Saturday, July 4
- Check Please by Jonathan Rand. Directed by Jordan Ross. A fast-paced
comedy that follows two characters, Guy and Girl, as they go on a series of
disastrous blind dates. The play jumps back and forth between their
experiences, with each new date introducing a wildly awkward, bizarre, or
completely incompatible suitor. As the encounters grow more ridiculous,
both Guy and Girl become increasingly frustrated with the dating scene—
until, after all the chaos, they discover that the right match might have been
closer than they thought.
- The Death of Me by Norm Foster. Directed by Bill Morrow. When John
bargains with the Angel of Death for a second chance at life, he quickly
discovers that fixing the mistakes of the past is not easy. On the other hand,
he comes to discover that his destiny is not set in stone. There is a chance to
do things over and patch up old wounds.
- Loser Lunch by Penny Barker. Directed by Penny Barker. After all of their
coworkers at Kendall Distributing win a huge lottery prize and quit their jobs,
only Dell, Lee, and Jody remain. As the three colleagues struggle with the
business and an uncertain future, they learn that the company has just been
purchased by a mysterious new owner. Coffee is consumed, memories are
shared, and secrets revealed while they wait to learn their fate at the Loser
Lunch.
