by Robert Louis Stevenson
adapted by Richard Abott
directed by Jen Buder
Dr. Jekyll is a kind, well-respected, and intelligent scientist, who meddles with the darker side of science, as he wants to bring out his “second” nature. He does this through transforming himself into Mr. Hyde—his evil alter ego, who doesn’t repent or accept responsibility for his evil ways.
The play is based on Strange Case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, a gothic horror novella that Robert Louis Stevenson wrote in 1886. The first stage adaptation was performed in Boston in 1887, and there have been more than 120 different film and stage versions and adaptations over the years. There have also been audio recordings, and even several video games based on the story. Richard Abbott’s adaptation was written in 1941.
