Job Posting: Part-time Theatre Critic and Researcher

Job Description

The Kingston Theatre Alliance’s Performance Blog is a primary resource for audiences, artists, and theatre practitioners to engage in critical dialogues. Our platform consolidates events and news about arts workers and organizations in the Southeastern Ontario area in an accessible and accountable manner never seen before by the region. The writing team looks for passionate individuals who are committed to questioning who and what criticism is FOR, all while building a stronger sector for live performance in the region.

Kingston Theatre Through the Years (KTTY) is a research project that will consolidate the past century of Kingston’s theatre history. We are working to celebrate the growth of theatre in our region and provide a resource to artists and arts administrators that will benefit them in grant applications, collaborations, and historical pieces. KTTY is looking for writers and researchers interested in uncovering Kingston’s stories and sharing them with the public.

The Theatre Critic and Researcher will work with both the KTA Blog and KTTY team.

Responsibilities

  • Produce and publish reviews, interviews, opinion pieces, and other forms of coverage on theatre/live performance practice in the Kingston and Southeastern Ontario region. Content may take the form of writing, video, podcasts, etc.
  • Achieve a fast turnaround (24 hours) for each article.
  • Pitch ideas for blog content including potential reviews, interviews, and opinion pieces.
  • Attend weekly meetings with the editorial team.
  • Represent the blog in a professional manner while attending all events.
  • Assist the Project Leads in gathering online resources.
  • Collect the Queen’s Archives information and compile it in an easy to access way.
  • Create an internal database/system for locating where the in-person materials are (for future people on the project to access easily).
  • Create a citations spreadsheet.
  • Digitize documents/take photos of relevant material.
  • Miscellaneous administrative tasks, as needed to support Project Leads.
  • Write essays to accompany the timeline.
  • Collaboratively develop the timeline.

Requirements

  • Detailed-oriented; strong time management and organizational skills.
  • Research productions, producing organizations, and individual artists to contextualize articles.
  • Passion for live performance and a desire to inspire community engagement with theatre and other forms of live performance in Kingston.
  • Thrives while working within a small and passionate collaborative writing team. 
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively. 
  • Strong understanding of Google Spreadsheets
  • Strong writing, research, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Positive attitude and willingness to learn.
  • Familiarity with southeastern Ontarian arts.
  • Must be a student of a post-secondary institution in which there is crossover between employment and studies.

Eligibility

This position is funded by Student Work Placement and requires the successful candidate to be a student. 

Dates

10-20 hours per week from July 2026 – January 2027. 

Compensation

Pay will be $21.65/hour.
